I think it goes with the original BN plot as I see it: Anna offers herself instead of the duel, and she's not ready to accept Vladimir's heart in full after the proposal (though she says "yes" ). I see it the same way. Sometimes they were tricked into action by the circumstances, and they didn't really do as they wished. Their story is a little like "Beauty and the Beast", I can't help associating them.
